I’d like to introduce you to a woman who is out here lifting Caribbean art so high the world has no choice but to look up and pay attention. Her name is Lisa Howie and she came with purpose, vision and a passport ready for every art fair from Miami to Nassau. This woman is building bridges through creativity and doing it with the kind of grace and strategy that makes you stop and say yes maam.
Lisa is the powerhouse behind Black Pony Gallery, a virtual online platform she launched in twenty nineteen with one bold mission. She wanted to elevate the global conversation around contemporary visual artists from the Caribbean and the mid Atlantic. Let me tell you something, she did not just create a gallery, she created a movement. One rooted in culture, identity and a whole lot of artistic brilliance.
Based in Bermuda, Lisa keeps her feet grounded in the community while letting her vision travel the world. She connects with local partners and industry leaders to cultivate opportunities for the artists she represents. She even curated artwork throughout the Cambridge Beaches Hotel, turning every room into a mini gallery experience. And as if that was not enough, she has an emerging space at the Saint Georges Marina giving artists yet another platform to shine.
Now baby the beauty of Lisa’s approach is her light footprint. She is not tied to one place so she can roam, explore and make global impact. She stays present at the biggest art fairs out there like the Scope art show in Miami, the one fifty four contemporary African art fair in New York City and the Fuze art fair in Nassau Bahamas. Nasaria is an artist of some great work shown at Fuze as well. And let me tell you, when Lisa walks into a room she does not just attend, she connects.
It was at Fuze where she linked up with celebrity chefs Carla Hall and Marcus Samuelsson and even shared space with the rock legend himself Lenny Kravitz. Now you know when you start rubbing elbows with that level of star power you are doing something right. Lisa is ready to strengthen her ties with the celebrities who call the Caribbean Atlantic home because she knows they love the region and would absolutely enjoy diving deeper into its art scene. She has her eyes on names like Richard Branson, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, and Michael Bloomberg. Baby the vision is big and the alignment is real.
And while she is making these connections internationally she is still showcasing extraordinary artists on the main stage. At Scope she presented the work of Charles Zuill and Jason A Bennett, two visionaries who use abstract expression to challenge the clichéd imagery of the so called Caribbean paradise. These men are pushing boundaries and Lisa is right there elevating their voices.
Lisa Howie is more than a curator. She is a cultural connector, a visionary leader and one of the strongest advocates for Caribbean and mid Atlantic art you will ever meet. With every fair she attends and every artist she uplifts she is rewriting the narrative and baby the world is finally paying attention.
