When the police arrive at your house the story usually gets far more complicated than whatever started the argument in the first place. And that is exactly what happened at the home of former NBA star Iman Shumpert last week. What began as a call about a verbal dispute quickly turned into conflicting accounts accusations and a whole lot of tension inside one very crowded household.
According to police they responded to a call concerning an argument involving Shumpert and a woman identified as Joanna Donnejour. When officers arrived they saw Shumpert outside placing a suitcase by the door. He told them he had asked Donnejour to leave several times and made it very clear that he wanted her off the property.
When officers spoke to Donnejour she said the disagreement began in Shumpert room and involved her confronting him about communicating with another woman. To make the moment even more tense she said another woman was present during the argument. According to Donnejour the situation escalated when Shumpert removed her from the room by dragging her by her wrist and foot toward the stairs. She also claimed that he hit her and she told the police she intended to press charges.
But as with many situations like this another witness had a different version. Officers say they talked to the other woman at the scene and she did confirm that a verbal argument happened. However she said that after Shumpert asked Donnejour twice to leave the room he grabbed her wrist only to escort her out and she insisted it was not done in an aggressive way. According to her there was no hitting and no dragging down the stairs.
The police stayed on the scene until Donnejour left on her own. They made sure everything calmed down before clearing the call and heading out.
Afterward Shumpert addressed the incident publicly. He said he had friends over that night and that a visitor was damaging personal property. He said he repeatedly and politely asked her to leave and that police were invited inside to assess the situation. He said multiple people confirmed what happened and that the police repeatedly instructed Donnejour to vacate the property. According to Shumpert she refused to leave until the officers escorted her out.
Shumpert said the matter was quickly closed by police after their investigation and no further action was needed.
Situations like these always leave the public with questions. Whenever emotions are high and multiple voices are involved it takes time for the truth to settle. For now police considered the matter resolved that night but as always we will have to see whether this situation stays quiet or resurfaces later in another chapter of celebrity life.
