Real Talk: Seeking Truth in a Painful History

The family of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black student found dead on the Delta State University campus, is demanding answers. Despite the state medical examiner ruling his death a suicide, his family and community are calling for a deeper investigation. This story hits different, tapping into a history that many feel is still raw.

Trey’s body was discovered hanging from a tree, a tragic image that for many brings up the painful past of racial violence and lynchings. The local police say there’s no foul play, but the family isn’t buying it. They’ve hired attorney Ben Crump, and with the help of Colin Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative,” they’re pushing for an independent autopsy.

As Crump put it, “Peace will come only by getting to the truth.” This isn’t just about one young man’s death; it’s about a community grappling with generational trauma. The demand for transparency is loud, from students on campus to figures like Rep. Bennie Thompson, who has called for a federal investigation, stressing the need to “leave no stone unturned.”

This is a story about trust, history, and the fight for an unvarnished truth in a world that often presents a simple narrative.
